Erie sits far enough north, with a dark horizon over the lake, that the aurora is a real possibility here a few times a year. This page tells you when to look, where to look, and — just as importantly — what you should honestly expect to see.

Looking north over the lake is Erie’s advantage. There are no city lights out over the water, so the northern horizon is darker here than almost anywhere inland. Get away from streetlights and give your eyes 20 minutes to adjust.
Kp is not a guarantee. It is a three-hour global average, not a local forecast. Clouds, moonlight and light pollution all decide what you actually see, and short substorms can produce a brief display even at a lower Kp. Check the cloud forecast before you drive anywhere.
What the northern lights actually are
The Sun constantly streams charged particles into space. Sometimes it throws out a great deal more of them at once — a coronal mass ejection, or a fast stream of solar wind escaping through a coronal hole. When that cloud of particles reaches Earth a day or three later, it slams into our magnetic field.
Earth’s magnetic field funnels those particles toward the poles and down into the upper atmosphere. Around 60 to 250 miles up, they collide with oxygen and nitrogen atoms and knock their electrons into a higher energy state. When those electrons drop back down, the atom releases the extra energy as a photon of light. That glow is the aurora.
The colour depends on which gas is glowing and how high up it is. Oxygen at roughly 60 to 90 miles produces the familiar green. Oxygen much higher, above about 125 miles, produces deep red. Nitrogen contributes blues and purples along the lower edge of a bright display.
What you’ll actually see from Erie
This is the part most aurora coverage gets wrong, so it is worth being blunt about.
On a typical good night here, the aurora is a faint, colourless grey-white glow low on the northern horizon. It can look like the light pollution from a distant town, or like a thin cloud that will not move. Most people who see it do not immediately realise what they are looking at.
Erie is roughly 1,400 miles from the magnetic pole. The bright green curtains you see in photographs from Alaska, Iceland and northern Norway are happening directly overhead in those places. From here, that same glow is beyond the curve of the Earth — we are looking at the top of it, edge-on, from hundreds of miles away.
That distance is also why mid-latitude observers so often report red or pink rather than green. The red emission happens much higher in the atmosphere, so it clears our horizon when the green layer beneath it does not.
Two or three times a decade, a severe geomagnetic storm pushes the aurora far enough south that it fills the sky over Erie with visible colour and structure. The storm of 10 May 2024 was one of those nights. Those events are genuinely spectacular — and they are the exception, not the expectation.
Why the photos look better than the real thing
Nearly every aurora photo you have seen was taken with a long exposure — the camera’s shutter stayed open for several seconds, collecting light the whole time. Your eyes cannot do that. They refresh continuously and, in very low light, they switch to rod cells, which are far more sensitive to motion and brightness than to colour.
The practical result: a display your camera renders as vivid green and magenta may look grey and washed-out to your eyes. This is not your phone lying, exactly, but it is not what you are seeing either. Modern phone night modes make this gap wider, not smaller.
Use it to your advantage. If you suspect there is something on the northern horizon but cannot tell, point your phone north and take a 3 to 10 second night-mode exposure. The camera will confirm it before your eyes do.
Reading the Kp number
Kp is a 0 to 9 scale describing how disturbed Earth’s magnetic field is worldwide over a three-hour window. Higher Kp means the auroral oval has expanded further from the pole — and further toward us. It is the number the card at the top of this page is built around.
Two honest caveats. Kp is a global three-hour average, not a forecast for Erie, so a high number does not guarantee a local display. And it works both ways: short, sharp bursts of activity called substorms can produce a brief showing at a lower Kp than you would expect. Clouds and moonlight still decide everything.
Where to watch near Erie
Erie has one real advantage: the lake. Look north from the shoreline and there is nothing out there — no towns, no streetlights, no glow on the horizon for as far as the aurora would appear. Most inland cities at our latitude are looking north straight into somebody else’s light pollution. We are not.
- Get north of the city lights. Presque Isle’s north-facing beaches, or anywhere along the shoreline east or west of town, put the water between you and the horizon.
- Give your eyes 20 minutes. Dark adaptation is slow and one glance at a phone screen resets it. Use red light if you need light at all.
- Check the clouds first. This is what actually ruins most attempts. The card at the top of this page links straight to the Erie cloud forecast.
- Watch the moon. A bright moon washes out a faint display completely. The live card tells you tonight’s illumination.
When to look
Aurora is most often visible in the hours around local midnight, though a strong storm can produce a display any time it is properly dark.
Statistically, geomagnetic activity runs higher around the March and September equinoxes — an effect of how Earth’s magnetic field is tilted relative to the solar wind at those times of year. Late summer through autumn is also simply more practical here: the nights are long enough to be properly dark, and the weather is less reliably overcast than in January.
We are currently on the downslope of Solar Cycle 25, which peaked around 2024 and 2025. That is better news than it sounds. The declining phase of a solar cycle tends to produce recurring high-speed solar wind streams from coronal holes, which are a reliable source of moderate geomagnetic storms. Good aurora chances at our latitude should persist for the next few years.
Next lunar eclipse over Erie
Penumbral lunar eclipse — Sat Feb 20
Technically visible, realistically not. A penumbral eclipse only dims the Moon slightly, and this one is very shallow. Most people looking up will see an ordinary full Moon.
